I have a 2009 13" MBP 2.26 C2D, 4 GB RAM, and I am looking to upgrade to the 15" low end model. Now I am a college student, and I do a lot of webcaming(iChat), MS Office, Firefox, movie watching, and looking at large(100+ pgs) PDFs(>100MB), and yes, I do a lot of this at once. I can have about 7 or 8 things open at once. So far, my computer is holding up, but sometimes it can hang. Pretty soon I am also going to start playing some games, and I know the integrated graphics are a step up from my 9400M. I am really looking forward to the 15" screen, but I am wondering if I will really see a difference in my day to day activities with at 2.0 Core i7 Quad. I know that an i7 Quad is overkill for me, but I believe in resale value and future proofing. Also, do you think it would be worth it do upgrade the screen resolution?
    Thanks in advance!

Hi, I'm doing some research into the 10.6 OS I've come across two pieces of seemingly conflicting documentation.

In the Network Services Admin 10.6 PDF (http://images.apple.com/server/macosx/docs/Network_Services_Admin_v10.6.pdf) on pages 23-24 I'm reading "Mac OS X Server uses the xinetd process to manage many UNIX network services, such as FTP, finger, and so on. xinetd listens for requests on specific TCP/IP sockets and is a secure replacement for inetd. However, because xinetd does not handle RPC services well, inetd and xinetd are included with Mac OS X."

But Apple TN2083 (http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#technotes/tn2005/tn2083.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/DTS10003794) says "Starting with Mac OS X 10.4, inetd and xinetd daemons are deprecated in favor of launchd daemons; a launchd daemon can specify a list of TCP and UDP ports to listen on as part of its property list file. Starting with Mac OS X 10.5, inetd and xinetd daemons are no longer supported. However, it's easy to run an existing inetd or xinetd daemon by creating and installing a simple launchd property list file (resulting in an inetd-compatible launchd daemon). For an example of this, check out /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/finger.plist."

Can anybody shed some light on this? I have a feeling the TN is correct, but it would make me sad to find out that Apple's own server documentation is out of date. I'd attempt to poke around in the system myself, but sadly I can't afford a copy of 10.6 server. Lion can't come fast enough!

Thanks in advance for any info anybody can provide.

Some people claim that the x86 processor family is more susceptible to buffer overflow exploits than the PPC family is. I don't understand all the details myself, but the basic idea is that in many cases the core issue of security vulnerabilities is that under certain situations, data that is supposed to be "information," but not "code," in that it is put in a place where executable code is not supposed to reside (i.e. inside a graphic file, or whatever), is allowed to act as code. The buffer overrun issue appears to be an area where a number of these exploit possibilities exist.

You can see more in this thread:

I can't seem to save it. I put the cd in the drive, Quicktime opens & does nothing. When I click on File, the only drop downs are, Open URL, Open File and Open Recent....all of the save options are not highlighted.

I know there is something simple that I'm leaving out but have been having a hard time with my brain lately...... please excuse the mess!!:confused:

when I pull up Spotlight, it has it listed down in movies and top hit but again, Quicktime opens full screen and just remains black.

HELP a girl out my friends!! Please
    thanks:D

Seriously, all you folks who are saying this and that about the bezel control (i.e. Every time I touch it I'll adjust the volume, or change my ringtone... blah, blah...), do you really think Apple would release it's "next big thing" without making sure it worked perfectly, intuitively, and didn't just go completely haywire every time you touch it or bump it?

For crying out loud, the company's future depends in no small part on the iPod, I'm fairly certain Apple's going to make sure each successive iPod is as innovative and market-dominating as the rest of the line has been. THat includes ease-of-use.

Have a little faith, here. You see one patent filing and freak out. Sheesh.

mb maybe but for your groovy camera ;)

i liked your first one better and i will be voting - silly question where do i buy the apple font btw?
Will you take a genuine Apple mousepad instead? :)

The font, Myriad Pro, is available form Adobe for $30, though if you have any Adobe CS apps it should've come bundled. Do a spotlight search, click the font, and select 'install font' when fontbook launches.

    Hope I didn't just give away a trade secret! :p :D

Try %escape-coding your string (there is a method in NSString for doing this).

As an experiment I downloaded Angry Birds Rio HD to my iTunes account and copied it to the shared user folder.
I logged out of my user account (not iTunes) on my Mac and logged in as my wife. I dropped the .ipa file into her iTunes account and the app synced and works fine.

I never had to be logged into iTunes with my login at all to get the app transfered.

Thoughts on how this is possible? To easy?

You will need to get two active MDP to DVI adapters (Amazon has them for about $35 each), passive adapters will only work with up to 2 monitors. The Apple dual-link/active adapters will work but they are expensive, and if you don't need the dual link, they are overkill as well. The real issue is the resolution of the monitors, and you may need the dual-link/active expensive adapters depending on the monitor you connect. I don't know much about that, so maybe someone who knows for sure could chime in...

That's assuming the Samsung monitors only have DVI inputs and no DisplayPort .. ports... Then yes, you would need some active adapters.

But yes, the 3 monitors can plug in and "screen span" as you call it. It's just simply set from the Display sections of the System Preferences.

As for the Nvidia 8800GT... I dunno. Don't have one. But, probably? If the 8800GT only needs 1 power connector - the 5770 will take 1 power connector leaving one spare.

The original Airport cards can do WPA, but only on 10.3.9 and above. If you're having trouble connecting, try turning off the router's N mode if it has it. I've found turning it off helps it connect.

i have a couple Lexar 16GB 233X cards for my 7D and they work great. Shot lots of video at 1080x24 and 30 and also 720x60 and absolutely no problems with write speed, even for full length (4GB) videos. Continuous shooting at the 8fps on the 7D is also great, very long bursts capable with the 233X (approximately 30MB/s) cards.

The 400x will perform great for you (although remember there are a couple different speed multipliers for '_ _ _ x'... so the actual number of MB/s may vary) 300x is around 45MB/s (not mbps like you posted).

    Hope that helps!

I have a Time Machine back up from a White MacBook that I sold. I started fresh when I purchased my Unibody MacBook Pro. My question is... is there anyway I can grab some of those files from the old Time Machine backup and put on my new MacBook Pro? Any advice would help. Thanks!

    Hello,

on an art-television-channel I saw an article about a Finnish Science Fiction movie comedy.

the plot: 1945, the nazis send a rocket to the moon. On the dark side of the moon they built a colony and come back 2018 to capture the world.

Sounds like a b-movie/trash-movie, but I think it could be fun (and I like hilarious trash movies some time).

unfortunately the teaser does not rise a lot interest (my opinion), but there is a good critique article, unfortunately it is in german. Maybe you can find an article in finnish or english via google somewhere.

    http://www.3sat.de/page/?source=/kulturzeit/tips/151764/index.html
    teaser: http://www.ironsky.net/
better teaser (English with german subtitle): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRZu-_0EHGI

It has an interesting financial aspect. One can lend his/her money and if the movie makes profit, you get your money back with a plus. (Very unsecure, but one fan said, he had a better feeling losing all his money on a film, instead of investing in a firm, that will close in the cause of the financial crisis. An idealistic approach for people loving strange things of movie art ;)

They have earned a third of the actual production costs it says in the article, till now. Movie will start in europe in 2012.

    Hello,
I am writing a Cocoa application and I am running into a problem, when closing the about box to my app the application terminates. I call the following method so that when my main window closes the app terminates:

    -(BOOL)applicationShouldTerminateAfterLastWindowClosed:(NSApplication *)sender{
